House Bill 587

Cleveland Sight Center is working to increase the visibility and awareness for support of House Bill 587, which would require Medicaid coverage for white canes. Part of this awareness is a letter-writing campaign to state legislators that CSC staff members, Board Trustees, clients, volunteers and friends of the agency can participate in.

Below is a template letter to send to your Ohio State Representative. For a list of State Representatives, visit

Dear Representative (Name),

I write to ask for your support of House Bill 587, which will provide Medicaid coverage of white canes for individuals who are blind or have low vision. There are currently many gaps in insurance coverage for services and equipment for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Coverage of white canes is one such gap that I hope you will vote to fill when the legislature returns this fall.

It is my understanding that policy regarding Medicaid coverage for white canes has not been changed since Medicaid was created in1965. I would like to thank the members of the Ohio House for revisiting this important issue to bring Medicaid coverage up to date with the needs of its citizens. It is extremely meaningful to myself and others that will be impacted by its passage that you are taking the time to consider this bill. House Bill 587 will take a step toward closing the gap in insurance coverage that exists for individuals with visual impairments.

I urge your support of House Bill 587 and ask that you remain engaged in additional discussions regarding insurance coverage for individuals with visual impairments. Thank you in advance for your consideration of this important bill. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.
