VISION SCREENING VAN
Cleveland Sight Center has proudly put into service a new vision screening van, made possible by a generous contribution from The David H. and Barbara M. Jacobs Charitable Trust.
The $65,000 van was introduced in a dedication ceremony at the Puritas Head Start Center in Cleveland on the morning of October 10. Michael E. Grady, executive director of Cleveland Sight Center; John Jacobs, representing the Jacobs Foundation; and Peggie Price, vice president of Children and Families, Head Start briefly addressed the audience. The children at the daycare facility attended the ribbon cutting and then participated in a vision screening in the van after the ceremony.
Nurses and trained volunteers in the Prevention & Education department at Cleveland Sight Center will use the new van for vision screenings at daycare facilities, senior centers and community events throughout the Sight Center’s service area. The van will travel on a daily basis and welcome over 15,000 children and adults each year.
Prevention & Education
Our community outreach services by registered nurses with the assistance of trained volunteers identify conditions which could lead to permanent vision loss, and increase awareness of the importantce of eye-care through informational programming.
Preschool Vision Screening
Pre-school vision screening (ages 3 to 6) is a quick, effective means to identify children who may have unsatisfactory vision. Children may have unrecognized vision problems such as amblyopia, or "lazy eye," that if not treated early could result in permanent vision loss and affect their ability to learn. Every pre-school age child should be screened every year while eyesight is developing.
Vision & Glaucoma Screening
Glaucoma, often called "the sneak theif of sight," works slowly and progressively as it gradually destroys vision. When discovered early and properly treated, glaucoma can usually be controlled, dramatically reducing the progression of vision loss.
Informational Programs are Provided on Request
Topics include: The Aging Eye; Eye Safety & Care; EYE-dea Shop Vision Aid demonstrations and many others.
Volunteers are Always Needed!
Training for volunteer screeners takes place at Cleveland Sight Center in University Cricle, or in the community. Call Prevention & Education at (216) 791-8118.
