mployment Preparation

PREP is geared toward helping clients who are visually impaired or blind gain the practical skills and confidence necessary to achieve and maintain independence through employment. The first phase of PREP is assessment. This is done in a positive, nurturing environment where individuals experiencing vision loss recognize areas needed for growth. The second phase is the identification of a complete training program which is developed based on each individual’s level of need via an individual service plan.

The program targets five main areas:

  • Employment Readiness - skills to obtain and maintain employment
  • Vision Skills- tools and techniques to enhance functional vision
  • Mobility Training - skills to travel independently in the community and at work
  • Communication Skills - skills to communicate effectively in a sighted world
  • Adaptive Daily Living - skills to achieve effective ADL’s at work & home

Training in PREP is always done in conjunction with other services provided by Cleveland Sight Center, including:

Rehabilitation & Mobility

Our skilled staff teach you how to get around and function safely in your home, work, school and community. This training allows you to function as independently as you are able to and whenever possible, to resume activities that you may have given up due to vision loss.

Rehabilitation training involves providing training and techniques to help you improve your daily living skills, mobility, and increase your independence. This training often takes place in your home or in another setting in your community.

Orientation and Mobility training will help you learn to get around safely on your own, including in your home, your school, your place of employment and how to use public transportation. This may include learning how to use a white cane.
