FUNDAMENTALS FOR SUCCESS
Local Organizations Support Fundamentals for Success Program
We offer our sincere appreciation to the organizations shown below that partnered with us to make the 2009 Fundamentals for Success program so extraordinary for this year’s participants. This summer program prepares teens and young adults who are blind or visually impaired with information and skills necessary to transition to as independent a life as possible with an emphasis on career exploration and preparation. Skills assessment and training, job search and interview techniques, job shadowing, and most important, real-life work experience are part of this program, complemented by comprehensive independent living skills training.

Summer Transition
This is a six-week program offered in the summer from June through July. The first week consists of a comprehensive academic and vocational evaluation resulting in the development of an individualized service plan to be carried out during the following five weeks. The program prepares participants for college or vocational training by helping them determine a career path according to their skills, interests and opportunities. Services include independent living, survival skills, orientation and mobility, technology, financial aid/scholarship counseling, and developing recreational and social skills. Cleveland Sight Center has 34 years of experience teaching young adults who are blind or visually impaired critical daily living skills in a comprehensive summer program, to help them successfully transition from high school to college, or directly to work. The program promotes independent living via a residential apartment setting, paid real-life work experience, and cutting-edge computer technology training, all under the instruction and supervision of trained rehabilitation professionals. Staff-to-student ratio is 2-to-1 for this program. Cleveland Sight Center is a CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accredited agency for Comprehensive Vision Rehabilitation Services.
Upon completion of the program, one of the 2009 student participants wrote a letter saying, “…Another class that I really enjoyed was Randy’s computer class. Before I came I absolutely hated computers, and most of all hated typing…As of now I know all the finger placements and keys of the key board, and I can type around 15-20 words per minute. I know it’s not that fast but before I had no idea how to type. And by the way I typed this paper properly while not even looking at the key board. I really enjoyed my stay at the Sight Center…this has got to be the greatest experience ever, this has really impacted my life.”
The 2010 program will be held from June 20 to July 30. Please contact our Children and Young Adult Services department at 216-791-8118, ext. 8768 for more information or to register a young adult for this program.
