BLIND & VISUALLY IMPAIRED RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS
Books on Tape
The Recreation Department receives commercial books on tape that we are pleased to loan out. Books available include, "The Greatest Generation" by Tom Brokaw, "The Lives of the Kings and Queens of England," Robert Kurson's "Shadow Divers," and Vince Flynn's novel, "Consent to Kill" to name a few. Please contact Jeri Rask at 216.791.8118 x 226 to request a book on tape.
Blind & Vision Impaired Golf
Blind Golf program is a great way to meet people, increase your mobility skills and get back in the game! Members play regularly on Northeast Ohio courses, east and west. Members travel to other states for tournaments where they can also enjoy a closing golfer and coach scramble. Golf is for the beginner with no experience up to scratch golfers with low handicaps.
Blind & Vision Impaired Sailing
Because of the generosity of friends of Cleveland Sight Center, we have two sailboats. During the summer, our crew of clients goes sailing with a team of sighted mates and skippers.
Blind & Vision Impaired Rowing
Clients can participate in blind and vision impaired rowing activities, in partnership with volunteers from the Western Reserve Rowing Association. This can be a strenuous activity, so you will need to demonstrate that you are in good physical condition to be accepted into this program.
Blind & Vision Impaired Bowling
More than 30 people participate in our blind and vision impaired bowling programs. In 2002, one of our bowlers traveled to Europe and came home with 3 gold and 4 silver medals in an international blind bowler’s tournament.
Beeper Baseball
A number of our Cleveland Sight Center clients also play for the Cleveland Scrappers, an independent beeper baseball team. For information about the Scrappers, please call (216) 287-0945.
Additional Blind and Visually Impaired Programs
Other accessible and adaptive Recreational Activities include tandem biking in the Cleveland Metroparks, weekend trips, and other social events. Also offered are discount tickets to Cleveland area theatres for Audio Described Performances for theatre patrons who are visually impaired or blind.
