Meet Chacity

Chacity is a native Clevelander who describes her remaining vision as similar to a broken TV.

“The way I see is kind of like how sighted people see a TV with a bad picture,” she explained. “The backdrop is very fuzzy, but you can still make out images.”

She came to Cleveland Sight Center’s Clinic hoping to find tools to help her read – particularly her mail and bills. Together, Chacity and CSC’s Clinic staff worked together to figure out the best technology to help her achieve that goal. One potential tool was Ray-ban Meta Glasses. While these glasses are not marketed as assistive technology, with the right training, they can be a game-changer! They may look like traditional Ray-bans, but they can do so much more than the average pair of glasses. For those wearing the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, Meta AI is a voice-activated assistant that can help make calls, send texts and even read printed text aloud.

Chacity sits at a table and holds up a clipboard with a paper on it, while wearing her Ray ban meta glasses “When it reads the mail, you can ask, how much is due? When is it due? Is there a contact number? So instead of reading it over again, it can actually tell you,” Chacity said.

Once Erin (Occupational Therapist) and Tony (Optician) identified the Ray-Ban Meta glasses as the best fit for her goals, Tony fitted her lenses and submitted the order to get Chacity’s prescription in the glasses. He was even able to get the glasses to Chacity in two weeks despite the current backlog with Ray-Ban Meta glasses!

“It was like everybody was on it! That made me feel good. I'm grateful that they did that for me,” Chacity said.

During training, Erin helped set up the Bluetooth connection from the glasses to Chacity’s phone. She learned how to place calls, read a bill, answer a text message and more using the glasses. She’s excited to use the glasses to read menus independently at restaurants, too.

“Just being able to read my mail, that's wonderful for me,” Chacity said. “I don't have to depend on anybody. With the meta glasses, I can just ask an additional question. It’s a game changer!”Chacity sits at a desk as her computer training instructor stands next to her and explains how to do something on her laptop. Chacity is looking up at her instructor.

Now that she’s ready to go with her new Ray-ban Meta glasses, it’s on to computer training! She is excited to learn more and continue to implement the skills she’s gained through our other services, including orientation and mobility training, support groups, recreational activities and occupational therapy!

“I am forever thankful for Cleveland Sight Center and the patience of the employees,” Chacity said. “They're such a safe place.”

Cleveland Sight Center is proud to help Chacity and other members of the blind and visually impaired community navigate the visual world, and achieve their goals. What’s next for Chacity?

“I want to go back to school and be a social worker or a case manager, and get the training so I can work at Cleveland Sight Center!” Chacity said.
